A workshop for energy regulators in the Mediterranean entitled “The Role of Regional Organizations in Promoting a Coherent Regulation to Accelerate the Energy Transition under Security of Supply Concerns”

The Egyptian Gas Regulatory Authority organized a workshop for Mediterranean Energy Regulators Members (MedReg) on the sidelines of MedReg`s General Assembly meetings, which will be held for the first time in Cairo, hosted by GasReg, during the period from November 30 to December 2.

 

The workshop, which was held under the title “The Role of Regional Organizations in Promoting a Coherent Regulation to Accelerate the Energy Transition under Security of Supply Concerns” witnessed a constructive dialogue between participants, experts and specialists from European and Mediterranean countries with the aim of exchanging visions on working to enhance the efficiency of energy markets in Mediterranean countries in the face of Global challenges and developments, as the workshop raised many topics on the global scene, such as “Efficent Regulatory principles”, which represent a major concern of the national regulatory bodies for the energy sectors, in line with the events and developments the world is currently witnessing, as its importance is embodied in working to enhance The efficiency of it’s markets to face the current economic fluctuations, taking into consideration the main steps towards the gradual reduction of carbon.

 

 

Eng. Karem Mahmoud, Vice President of MedReg and CEO of Gas Regulatory Authority, indicated that the workshop dealt with alternatives and expected scenarios for an effective Mediterranean Energy Market, through the opinions, expectations and contributions of a high-level elite of senior experts and specialists from regional and European organizations in the field of energy who participated in the round discussions meeting.

The Egyptian Gas Regulatory Authority is hosting the meetings of the organization’s General Assembly in Cairo. Hosting this regional event related to energy markets in Europe and the Mediterranean represents an important opportunity to shed more light on the Egyptian state’s policies and its implemented vision to enhance Egypt’s strategic role as a regional hub for the circulation and trade of gas and oil. The role of GasReg in this regard, especially in establishing a free competitive market for gas in Egypt, which contributes positively to attracting new investments from the private sector and international companies, and gives the private sector an opportunity to compete in all activities of trading, receiving, trading, storing, shipping and distributing gas within the local market. It is worth mentioning Gas Regulatory Authority was established in accordance with Law no.196 of 2017 as part of the steps to implement the strategic vision through which Egypt became a regional hub for the circulation and trade of gas and oil, which required opening and liberalizing the Egyptian gas market to attract more investments in various gas activities in Egypt, and to strengthen its role in the Mediterranean region, and based on the results achieved by GasReg since its establishment, in which much of it has been relied upon A on technical support as one of the Regulator`s membership gains in regional and international organizations.
